Charles Augustus Smith, 84, of West Hyannisport, MA, died on May 17, 2017 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA.

Charlie was born in Lowell, MA on June 1, 1933 to Josephine Donohue Smith and Charles A. Smith. He graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1950. He attended Lowell Technological Institute, now the University of Lowell, where he received a BS and MS degree in chemistry.

Charlie spent his career at Monsanto Chemical, Pellon Corporation and ended his career at U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center, Natick Laboratories.

He married Ann Harrington, RN, on November 11, 1957; they would have celebrated their 60th anniversary in November. He was the father of Maura Smith of Boston, MA; Kevin Smith of Northampton, MA; and Brian Smith and his wife Kristin of Oak Bluffs, MA. He was the brother of the late Harriet Smith Gannon. He was grandfather to Gillian Smith of Braintree, MA; Siobhan Malaguti, and her husband Brandon, of Dartmouth, MA; Liam Smith, U.S. Air Force Airman First Class, of Harwich, MA; and Alice Smith of Oak Bluffs, MA. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Charlie loved music, especially jazz, and his favorite hobby was simply spending time with his wife and family. Although Charlie brought his family up in Chelmsford, MA and retired to his home on Cape Cod in 2000, his heart remained in Lowell, the town he loved so well.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial celebration of Charlie's life to be held at noon on June 10, 2017 at the Lowell Community Health Center, 161 Jackson Street, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the March of Dimes or the Jimmy Fund.
