Yarmouth Port - Emerson Forbush Markham, 83, died November 24th at the Cape Cod Hospital after suffering a stroke six days earlier.

Emerson was the husband of Linda Conant Markham who died in 1998.

Raised in Jackson Heights NY, he attended Trinity School in NYC class of '51, NYU School of Commerce (Stern School) class of '59, and NYU School of Law.

Emerson and his brother Gilbert spent their summers in South Dennis on the Bass River, where their parents: "Doc" and Ruth Markham built a cottage in 1934.

Before moving year round to the Cape, Emerson lived in Chappaqua and Bronxville NY and worked in Manhattan. In 1994, he and Linda moved to Barnstable and resided there until her passing, whereupon he moved to Centerville and finally to Yarmouth Port.

Emerson worked as an accountant and financial consultant for over sixty years. He believed that a working life is a useful life, and never fully retired. He loved his job because it allowed him to get to know people on many levels and to help them in tangible ways.

When Emerson was not traveling for enjoyment on his world-wide adventures he could be found as a regular at a variety of favorite restaurants around the mid-Cape area.

While on the Cape, Emerson was involved in several philanthropic endeavors for the Cape Cod Hospital, the Sturgis Library, and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.

Surviving Emerson are his daughter, Leslie Markham of Seattle, WA, his son, Jeffrey Markham of Wilmette, IL, four grandchildren, and his partner in life, Ina Clayman.

A memorial gathering will be held this summer. Announcement to follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cultural Center of Cape Cod either online or by check to 307 Old Main St., South Yarmouth, MA 02664.
